We have come to our last Ace! Moving alphabetically through the suits, the Ace of Wands rounds out our understanding of the Aces within the tarot, and the role that they serve in starting us off into the Minor Arcana.
I hope that after this blog, and reading the others, you have a deeper understanding and love for the powerful seed-spaces that the Aces provide. They initiate us, through a beautiful offering, into a beginning.
The Aces teach us that we can always plant a seed to initiate a journey, a phase, a new endeavor, or a new form of embodiment within our wild selves. No matter where we are at, we can always begin again.
As stated before, the numerology of One, here as our Aces, represents initiation, opportunity, new beginnings or potentials, and powerful independence. Aces are the seeds of the tarot. They represent the power within that emerges when placed in a setting that allows us to thrive, grow, and strengthen ourselves.
Our suit here is fire, symbolizing transformation, power, drive, our wild essence, and the stroke of ingenuity that allows us to live authentic, passionate lives. One of our greatest lessons here with this fresh start is how to hold the fire in ways that purge, but don’t rage. Destruction will be necessary, but the Ace teaches us when and where to harness this power.
Igniting the Spark with the Ace of Wands
Representing 1 of Fire, this is the energy of the spark, the pull of the match, or the pop of illumination. Immediately, we are put in the space of learning how to hold the flame and help the process of rebirth (we will see this clearly with the symbolism within the card). This is the energy of power in its infancy. With this card, we are in the process of discovering, or rediscovering who we are in the essence of ourselves.
The first way that I read this card is that it speaks to: Initiating within spirit that will help your spiritual evolution, wild reclaiming, and thriving life to take root. When this card comes forward, you are given the opportunity to begin again in your evolution. Small or big, it doesn’t matter. A spark can be the start of the wildfire. It can illuminate a muse to enter your life in ways that your creativity has never known. So, when this card comes forward, it is time to let the transformation happen, and help it in any way that you can.
Main invitations with the Ace of Wands:
1. Initiating within spirit that will help your spiritual evolution, wild reclaiming and thriving life take root
2. Follow the spark that creates and unleashes you- that will ultimately transform you
3. Honor the burning transformation from the past that created the fertile ground you have today
The next way that I read the Ace of Wands is that it speaks to: following the spark that creates and unleashes you, which will ultimately transform you. With this Ace, there is a need to learn how to hold the spark, but also a need to learn how to surrender to the burn. Transformation is at hand, and when we try to micromanage our transformations, we are undoing some of the most magickal work that can be done. When we allow this forward motion to happen organically, we see how to be a part of the co-creation, and we are doubly changed in exchange for this sacred gift.
The last way that I read the Ace of Wands is: Honor the burning transformation from the past that created the fertile ground you have today. Think of this as phoenix energy. Forever rising from the ashes, we can transform not only ourselves, but also our perspective. When we look at the painful burns we experienced in our past, we can see how that created the fertile soil for us to rise here and now. Pains from the past have created the potential for us to grow today. This may be one of the most powerful ways to use this card when it comes forward. Are we brave enough to rise from our own ashes? Can we transform not only ourselves but also our very approach to our situations and our inevitable evolution? That is what this card asks of us.
Symbolism and Imagery of the Ace of Wands
Looking at some of the cards now from across my collection, we start with the Rider-Waite Smith.
- Rider-Waite: A hand offers a growing hand against a neutral gray sky. The hand symbolizes that the Ace is a gift. The leaves symbolize rebirth and transformation. The wand itself represents an extension of the person’s will, and all of this is set against the backdrop of a neutral sky, meaning that the spark of creativity comes from within, guided by the gifts of life (the hand). In the bottom corner, there is a castle with a river. The castle symbolizes power that speaks for itself, showcasing the might of the will to rule. This is where we hope to get by the time we are through the Wands suit. The river highlights that when our emotions are part of the way we rule, we nourish and create together.
- Tarot of the Woodland Wardens: The fireflies symbolize this fleeting spark of inspiration and imagination. We need to grab hold of these beauties and let them guide us toward our path.
- Shadowscapes Tarot: Three foxes show that the spiral and the cycle has moved from contraction to expansion. Now is the time to take advantage of any opportunity that feeds your creativity.
- Mystical Dream Tarot: This card shows rebirth, hope, and grace. Again, very Phoenix energy, but the lotus blossom, the dove, and the woman bring a nice softness to this card. This is a reminder to learn how to channel that fire towards positive growth, instead of destructive force.
- Guardian of the Night Tarot: The spider’s web highlights the subtle vibrations as energy or things unseen move toward us. We have more fireflies, and the spider highlights the need for authenticity and creativity. Just as no two webs are the same, the creations we weave are our own.
- The Wild Unknown: A burst of radiating growth, positive energy, and bright illuminations to things that were once in the dark.
- Herbcrafter’s Tarot: Mullein highlights a few things here. The first is that dried mullein stalks can be immediately used to harness fire by dipping them in wax and then setting them on fire. Called witch’s candles, this is an immediate and easy torch for bringing light into the darkness. The second thing that it highlights is the power within that often gets overlooked. Mullein is a powerful medicinal herb, but often only seen as a pesky weed. You have so much inner power inside of you, as we all do. We often forget that and see only our flaws.
- Spirit Animal Tarot: Snake symbolizes the rising of energy through kundalini and the transformation through the shedding of the skin. This animal encourages us to explore our spirits more deeply, and learn how to awaken to life’s potency.
- Bird King Tarot: The lightning represents the pure streak of power that is fleeting and comes from nowhere. Soon, that power will be more helpfully channeled to the power lines to generate even more power.
- Hush Tarot: This image is much more ominous than previous illustrations. The house sparrow cultivates life, and speaks to productivity. The needle and thread in the beak speak to initiating new creative work that stitches the old and the new together.
- The Grimalkin’s Curious Cat Tarot: The cat uses its prowess, skill, and desire for the hunt to create a path forward. Following this journey will eventually take us to the tree where all the birds are, or whatever it is that we seek or desire in our spirit.
- The Crow Tarot: Standing on the precipice of the wand, the crow is following the desires of the spirit. Does it return to the city, full of endless opportunities and bustling energy? Or does it retreat to the wild land, where it is at home in its wild self? The choice is yours. Follow your spirit and trust the journey.
