Next in the tarot deep dives is the Ace of Swords. So far, we have done a deep dive into the Ace of Cups and the Ace of Pentacles. I encourage you to go back and read those blogs, or listen to the podcast episodes, as you will start to see the nuance and similarities between these cards.
Within the Minors, we have the benefit of leaning into both similarities and differences with the cards. The numerology will provide similarities; the nuance comes with the elemental association from the suit.
My goal with these deep dives is to provide you with a solid framework or foundation of information and imagery around how I read these cards, but I encourage you to build on this framework. Take a look at your cards and see what you see. Connect the dots with areas in your personal life where the Ace of Swords, or any card, shows up.
We are still in the numerology of One. The numerology of One, here as our Aces, represents initiation, opportunity, new beginnings or potentials, and powerful independence. Aces are the seeds of the tarot. They represent the power within that emerges when placed in a setting that allows us to thrive, grow, and strengthen ourselves.
The Swords suit takes these themes from the numerology, and now we apply them to the formidable part of our body connected to ego, truth, beliefs, and principles. We are now beginning something new within the mind.
Initiating New Ideas with the Ace of Swords
The Ace of Swords represents 1 of air, which means that there is a new idea, perspective, viewpoint, or new way of rational understanding with this card. Like our previously discussed Aces, this one, too, shepherds us into some kind of beginning or initiation. The difficult journey ahead with this initiation into the suit of swords will be mastery of self, identity, ideas, philosophies, and beliefs. We will learn how powerful the mind can be, both good and bad.
The first way that I read this card is: Conjuring and planting of new ideas, words, or understandings. When this card comes forward, it is an invitation to open up our minds. It is an encouragement to broaden our perspectives. It is a time to lift our eyes and own our inner truth, and the evolutionary journey that has now begun. The breakthrough begins here.

The next way that I read the Ace of Swords is: Mental breakthrough- spark to ignite a new journey or take a fresh breath. When this card comes forward, something behind the veil of the unknown becomes clearer. We may need to sit in reflection or use a chosen creative method to let this unknown become unknown. However, we engage with this card, there is something that, like a bolt of lightning, will promote new insight, inspiration, and clarity. We need to simply let this unknown emerge over time.
This Ace, like all the Aces, isn’t always action-based. These invitations of beginning can be as powerful as taking a first step, or as silent as thinking of a new word before engaging in conversation. It could be sitting in reflection or brainstorming something new. Like planting a seed, there is action needed to make sure the environment is right, but even if the environment is perfect, once the seed is planted, it needs time to take root and become the plant it will eventually become.
The last way that I read the Ace of Swords is: Spectrum of choices – what is within deeper alignment. When this card comes forward, we have one major thing going for us: hindsight. This precious gift is available with every Ace. We are going forward into this new journey, but we can and should use the lessons from the past to help steer us towards our future in more aligned ways.
Here, the hindsight comes in the form of lessons learned, reasoning that is applicable, and ideas of how to meet potentials and unknown. We see that there is more to the situations we encounter. We may be more aware of ourselves, what we need, and how to attain it because we have had to make similar choices in the past. One of the beautiful things about being in the suit of air is that we are dealing with ideas, thoughts, conversations, reasoning/logic, and our beliefs or principles.
The Ace of Swords shows us that we have the power and insight to make better and more aligned choices. We have the capacity to use the past to see clearly into the future. We have the sovereignty within to use our brain and our identity to meet whatever situation we face, and find a sense of victory, understanding or depth within the self that will serve us in perpetuity.
Symbolism and Imagery of the Ace of Swords
Looking at the symbolism of the Ace of Swords, we will find images and interpretations that speak to this victory, sovereignty, and breakthrough in the form of our power and our truths.
- Rider-Waite Tarot: This image shows a hand emerging from a cloud. The hand holds a sword upright that has been crowned and is adorned with greenery that symbolizes the need for balance. Google says: It is adorned with an olive branch (mercy) and a palm branch (severity), reminding you that truth must be balanced with both compassion and strength. The background is clear and free from distractions. The gold flames represent divine blessings, the opening of intuition, and a connection to the Lovers card, highlighting the need for fairness, emotions, and clear choices. The mountains show both challenges and victories on our journey ahead, and how we use our rational minds to meet each situation.
- The Wild Unknown: The lightning symbolizes divine intervention, sudden mental clarity, and raw power. The rainbow infinity symbol symbolizes unlimited potential and opportunities, alongside the symbolism of cycles. We have the idea planted, and now we go forward into the unknown with this mental clarity and power.
- The Herbcrafter’s Tarot: Yarrow is the accompanying herb that grows long and tall, symbolizing growing past old ways of thinking. Discernment and decisive learning are needed because yarrow look-a-likes can be deadly. Medicine and inspiration can be found in the most common of weeds/herbs.
- Ostara Tarot: My favorite depiction! A small mouse stands on the sword that has made a soldier fall in battle. This card symbolizes that truth, sovereignty, and mental clarity are the true victors. From the most humble of creatures can come the most authentic power and ownership of truth. Ethics, balance, and humility help curtail righteousness and toxic mentalities.
- Shadowscapes tarot: Swans (symbols of grace, spiritual awakenings, transformation, and devotion) stand in a circle around a sword. Butterflies (symbols of transformation and rebirth) are in the midst, some giving off a golden aura. This card shows that transformation, rebirth, and graceful power will light the way forward and will keep the mind soft as the heart and the spirit have an equal place on this journey.
- Hush Tarot: The Unicorn is another symbol of grace, purity, divinity, and freedom. The rider is ready to move forward in both the pursuit of truth and the defense of that truth. The hawks have a bird’s-eye view that lets them see far and wide, which will help with decisions as we advance.
- Grimalkin’s Curious Cat Tarot: A cat sits on the hilt of a sword while birds and a golden aura paint the sky. Poppies symbolize the needed balance between fragility and resilience. This image shows the need to take a stand, to have courage, and to be willing to change, grow, learn, and deepen your perspective going forward.
- Tarot of the Woodland Wardens: A crowned hawk takes to the sky in clarity, truth, and vision. His mastery of the sky symbolizes that you, too, can create mastery on your journeys if you are willing to see and follow the truth. The ivy symbolizes the need to adapt and also be aware of your core truths. Removing ivy makes it grow back stronger, so where does change and adaptability need to be part of the equation.
- The Guardian of the Night Tarot: The bat sees in the darkness, able to plot paths for flight and become aware of potential dangers. The grasshopper symbolizes the ability to stay true to yourself and good fortune. Datura symbolizes caution as ingesting any part of the plant can be fatal, but also spiritual mystery and messages. A quiet, clear mind can hear the inner voice more clearly.
- Spirit Animal Tarot: The stork is famously the bringer of babies, which is to say that the stork is the is a bringer of new beginnings. Like other animals shown, there is a grace with the stork. When we ascend over mental chaos and allow our ideas to be a harbinger of insight, inspiration, joy, and opportunity, we exude the power to gracefully and calmly see and then act.
- Crow Tarot: The clouds are parting, which means clarity is going to become easier. We cannot force insight. We can only calmly allow the space to be supportive. When that insight comes, we need to trust and take heed of the messages received. We are ready to fly, sail, or move towards something new and bigger than before.
