Description
I have gone out, a possessed witch,
haunting the black air, braver at night;
dreaming evil, I have done my hitch
over the plain houses, light by light:
lonely thing, twelve-fingered, out of mind.
A woman like that is not a woman, quite.
I have been her kind.
The first stanza of the poem Her Kind reads as above. This is one of my favorite poems and one of the first poems that made me consider how I connect to a narrator, an archetype (the witch), and a palpable feral nature.
Sexton’s poem serves as a template for how a witch, woman, or someone finds solidarity amidst oppression and loss. Her poem serves as a reminder that finding your true nature, however complex, scary, lonely, or haunting is better than having the white picket fence type of life. It is better to find your place on the fringe than try to fit in.
This five-card spread is going to speak to the themes found in the poem itself. These themes may include your witchcraft practice, loneliness, a feral identity, ideas around gender roles, shame, patriarchy, and sovereignty. Together, we will use the power of Anne Sexton’s beautiful poem for you to find your place in the wild places that you are meant to inhabit, relinquishing what is not serving your practice, or yourself.
I recommend this service…..
- You want to elevate your sovereignty through poetic channels
- You love Anne Sexton and want her words and her creation to be a guide for your own complexities
- You are tired of the same-old spreads and want fresh perspective
- You are working through the themes mentioned above and need space held for you through this process
- You trust the interconnection nature between sovereignty, identity, and archetypal symbolism
