Back in the day, when I was in college, Sex and the City was my favorite show. I watched it all the time. It was kind of like my comfort show. You know where you have something on in the background and you’re not really watching it. You’re maybe not even really listening to it, but because you know it so well, it’s hitting you on a subconscious level and it just makes you feel better. This was that show for me back in the day.
I recently re-watched the series from start to finish and, while it hasn’t aged the best for me (there are a lot of problems in this show, especially Carrie…..) I thought it would be fun to take these four protagonists, and connect them to the four Queens within the tarot. So the way that I am going to break down my connection between the protagonist to the queen that I think they are most suited for or embody the most is based on the fashion, (of course you cannot have a Sex and the City episode and not bring in the fashion).
I’m also going to talk about who they are as a character. I’m going to break down why I think they are this queen, or embody this queen, the most, based on how they engage with the other characters or how they just behave in the show, and I’m also going to touch on how their actions, their fashion, their lives, what they kind of stand for as a character, connects to me as a watcher and what that brings out of me, which is, of course, what the court cards do. They ask us to embody them, embody their traits, use them as a form of donning the characteristics that we all have within us and using that in our own lives and in our own selves to the best benefit for ourselves. So I’m also going to talk about kind of what they inspire in me as well.
Samantha Jones as the Queen of Pentacles
First looking at Samantha’s fashion, we see a work hard/play hard mentality. Her fashion is structured with straight lines and business-focused, but her bold and youthful attitude comes through in the bright colors, and she is often color-blocked to perfection. However, we also see a glamorous and elegant side to Samantha that shows her love of labels, beauty, and living a fabulous life.
She is confident, outspoken, self-sufficient, stubborn, and completely at home in her body, and in being alone. As a character, she makes the most sense as the Queen of Pentacles because she unapologetically lives her truth. She doesn’t care how society could, and does, look at her with her confidence and her sex life. She is going to live her life her way, and manifest that through her actions. She is also one of the more stable characters, with not giving in to the drama as much as the other girls (Carrie, table of one?)
Samantha, and the Queen of Pentacles, inspires in me to live my truth, and to boldly show up and manifest. She inspires me to work hard and play hard. More than anything, she reminds me that our lives are ours to make. While I don’t hold a love for labels like her, or any of the others do, I take her tenacity to show up each day in life, and not let anything get her down.
Miranda Hobbes as the Queen of Swords
Miranda makes the most sense as the Queen of Swords to me because she approaches life and fashion with a pragmatic and practical approach. Her fashion, like Samantha, is business-focused and appropriate for the law firm at which she works. She wears bold, but neutral colors and doesn’t emphasize a lot of flair through accessories. She lets the fashion speak. She would be someone who would buy more traditional clothes and doesn’t get sucked into fads. The clothes are quality, and she can wear them for a long time, and easily pair them with other items.
As a character, Miranda approaches life with a need for clarity and logic. She is mature for her age, and tries to make life easier by understanding the scenarios with less emotions. The edge with Miranda is that sometimes she neglects her feelings, but when she does honor them, it changes her life, like Steve. She also has a witty sense of humor, but can be cynical as a defense mechanism. More than anything, she is smart and capable, leading her to struggle in a world that is fun by facades, deceit, and ego.
What she, and the Queen of Swords, inspires in me is to take a good hard look at things, and see things from every possibility as a way to get ahead of the situation, protect herself, and plan for her future. Her boundaries and outspoken nature mean that she pisses a lot of people off, and she doesn’t care. Like the Queen of Swords, she is both hard and soft.
Charlotte York as the Queen of Cups
Charlotte York makes the most sense, to me, as the Queen of Cups because she is the hopeless romantic and eternal optimist. She has a view of her life, and doesn’t let experiences with men, or even her friends, detract from what matters the most to her in this world which is love and family. She even converted from her faith because of her love of Harry.
Her style is feminine, soft, and romantic. She wears a lot of lace, frills, bows, and pairs these with soft pastels to bring that sweet, romantic energy to her fashion. Often dubbed the princess in the show, we see that with her truly fairy-tale approach to life, including her fashion. Her clothing is often the least daring, but more upscale and traditional New York fashion that would be expected from her upbringing and wealth.
As a character, she brings a softness to the group. Her romantic and traditional views often clash with the others, but they need her to bring them back to a space of love, romance, and values. This isn’t to say that Charlotte doesn’t have a harder side, and she will fight hard for her friends, love, and what she believes in. She fights for what she loves because to her, love is worth fighting for. As a character, she inspires her to bring out the lover when me when I am more defensive or walled-off. In a world that is so hard-hitting, bringing a softness out is needed sometimes.
Carrie Bradshaw as the Queen of Wands
Carrie as our Queen of Wands comes with an edge because, truthfully, her actor has aged rather poorly. She is an absolute mess, but there some good things to her character after all these years. Fashion-wise, Carrie makes sense as the Queen of Wands because she has created a look that we all know to this day. She takes risks, breaks the “rules” of the fashion she loves, and dares to have fashion snafu’s for the sake of trying something new.
As a character, she has a passion for an exciting life. She isn’t a dull character, and cannot live a dull life (even if it gets her in more shit-shows than I could count when rewatching). Her art is her life, and her fiery approach to everything shows her refusal to settle, even when it costs her. She banters with the girls, and uses their lives as inspiration for her writing. More than anything, she constantly feels, and is, at odds with life around her, even the city and attractive men.
As a character, she inspires me to be authentic, passionate, and create (whether that is work or life) in a way that speaks to the ambitions and drives are unique to me. While I would never want to be the mess that she is, her humanness is sometimes refreshing, reminding me that we are all human, but what matters most is how we show up true to who we are in our spirit.
